Tall Fescue
Developed in the Pacific Northwest, Airlie is an improved turf
type-tall fescue with medium texture and dark color. In the 1997-2000
National Turf Evaluation Trials conducted at multiple locations
throughout the U.S., Airlie performed extremely well. It displayed
strong Brown Patch tolerance, excellent leaf spot resistance and
good pythium blight ratings. Airlie has also shown good wear tolerance
and good spring green up.
With excellent ratings in the transition zone as well as both
cool-humid areas and arid-humid areas, Airlie is well suited for
a wide range of climates and uses such as parks, roadsides, athletic
fields and home lowns were turf-type tall fescue is desired. It
exhibits good drought tolerance and shortened growth during the
winter months and requires less maintenance than other cool season
grass species to maintain color and sward density.
Airlie can be seeded as a straight variety or blended with other
turf-type tall fescue varieties of similar color and leaf characteristics.
Airlie should be seeded at normal turf-type tall fescue seeding
rates of 6-10 lbs per 1000 sq. ft. when broadcast. The seed should
be worked into the top ¼ inch of soil and kept moist throughout
germination and establishment.
Airlie performs best when fertilized with a heavy split fall
application of nitrogen and a lighter application in the spring.
Avoid seeding during the hot summer months as this can promote
disease pressure. Early mowing should be at 1.5 to 2.0 inches
and can be adjusted to the user’s preference after establishment.
