Perennial Ryegrass
Developed by Dr. Fred Ledeboer in Aurora, Oregon, Covet is an
improved turf-type perennial ryegrass that exhibits excellent
disease resistance, fine texture and medium dark color. In private
turf evaluation trials conducted from 1999-2001 in Western Oregon,
Covet consistently ranked higher in overall turf quality than
several well-known varieties that are currently on the market.
Covet is widely adapted for use as both permanent turf in northern
climates and overseeding in southern climates. In the 2000-2001
Mississippi State University Fairway overseeding study, Covet
performed in the top echelon of all varieties tested. Covet also
performed well in a permanent turf study performed at Adelphia,
N.J., during the 2000-2002 growing season, landing in the top
third of all varieties tested.
Covet is recommended for use in many different situations such
as golf courses, athletic fields, home lawns and other areas where
a dark, fine-textured perennial ryegrass turf is desired.
Covet is also an excellent blending and mixing variety with other
cool season grasses such as Kentucky bluegrass and fine-fescues.
It has good shade tolerance and has shown to have strong wear
tolerance as well.
In addition the product was tested in informal plot trial in
the intensely hot weather of the Phoenix/Scottsdale area. Covet
excelled in these tests.
Covet has shown to provide establishment on par with many other
top rated commercially available perennial ryegrass varieties.
It should be seeded at normal seeding rates for permanent turf
situations (5-10 lbs/1000 sq. ft.) and for southern golf course
overseeding (20-35lbs/1000 sq. ft.). Covet performs best when
fertilized with .5 lb to 1.0 lb of nitrogen per 1000 sq. ft. every
month during the growing season. Mowing height should be set from
1-2 inches, but can be lowered to both fairway and putting green
heights in golf course overseeding situations.
