Annual Ryegrass
Stockaid annual ryegrass was developed by the Florida Agricultural
Experiment Station and co-released with the Nebraska Agricultural
Experiment Station. It was tested as FL/NE X2002 (New 2) LRCT.
Stockaid was selected for an initial nursery consisting of 33%
Marshall Breeder Seed, 33% Florlina select, 17% Siken (a very
cold tolerant cultivar) and 16% Surrey II select which is more
cold tolerant than Surrey. Equal portions of plants of each type
were selected at Scottsbluff, Nebraska and Gainesville, Florida.
The cycle-two nursery consisted of selected seed traceable to
Marshall Breeder Seed (33%), 25% Siken and 8.3% Florlina and 33%
from the first cycle of selection as a general composite. In cycle-three,
seed of all genotypes of selected plants from both Gainesville
and Scottsbluff were interplanted and allowed to intercross. Plants
were selected in all genotypes in a grid and equal quantities
of seed harvested per plant.
In the cycle-four nursery equal quantities of seed from Florida
and Nebraska nurseries were intercrossed. Plants were selected
at both Florida and Nebraska locations over all genotypes and
harvested for use in the next cycle. More than 90% of plants were
killed by cold in Nebraska in this season. The seed from the remaining
10% of surviving plants was then used in the cycle-five nursery.
The cycle-five nursery consisted of equal quantities of seed
of selected plants from both Florida and Nebraska cycle-four nurseries.
Plants were selected at both locations and seed harvested from
individual plants. Seed was composited at both locations and then
equal quantities of these composites were mixed and used for planting
prebreeding seed for testing. Testing of the prebreeder seed has
shown excellent uniformity and forage potential.
Stockaid has late maturity, crownrust resistance, gray leaf
spot resistance and excellent cold weather hardiness. It is expected
to be best adapted to the northern edge of annual ryegrass production
regions, but with good adaptation over the entire ryegrass production
area.
